Artists’ Ink: Printmaking from the Warrnambool Art Gallery Collection 1970–2001

Curated by Anne Virgo, Director, Australian Print Workshop, this selection of prints is drawn from the collection of the Warrnambool Art Gallery and documents thirty years of Australian printmaking. Over 170 printmaking artists are represented in the Warrnambool Art Gallery Collection. The works selected for the exhibition at Deakin University represent a diversity of styles and approaches to the print medium. Also included in the exhibition are works by Yvonne Boag, Dean Bowen, John Coburn, Tim Jones, Graeme Peebles, Geoff Ricardo, Deborah Williams, Marion Manifold, Deborah Walker, Rona Green and many others.

The exhibition runs from 14 April to 22 May.

Contemporary Australian Drawings 1

The exhibition, which opened yesterday evening, focuses on the artists whose works appear in the forthcoming publication Contemporary Australian Drawing Volume 1 by Dr Janet McKenzie. It is held in conjunction with the 2010 International Drawing Out Conference at RMIT University.

Closing Drinks, Gallery 101 Melbourne

On Friday, 5 March, Gallery 101 held its final celebration after nearly 20 years of being a vital part of Melbourne's cultural life. Director Dianna Gold, Gallery Manager Martina Copley and Gallery Assistant and Media Liaison Officer Cate Massola were all a pleasure to work with, and I hope our paths will cross again one day. Many artists whose work I admire enormously, including Judy Holding, Heather Shimmen, Tim Gresham, Christopher Heathcote, Deborah Walker, and Angela Cavalieri, were exhibiting artists at Gallery 101. A number of us are also old friends, which added very much to the feeling of being part of a family. The Gallery will close its doors on March 13.

New Work - Monarch Butterfly Winged Woman

The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae), in the family Nymphalidae. Although it originated in the US, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871, where it is called the Wanderer. In Europe it is resident in the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, and is found as an occasional migrant in Western Europe. Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 centimetres (3½–4 in). (The Viceroy butterfly has a similar size, color, and pattern, but can be distinguished by an extra black stripe across the hind wing.) Female Monarchs have darker veins on their wings, and the males have a spot called the "androconium" in the center of each hind wing from which pheromones are released. Males are also slightly larger.

The Monarch is famous for its southward migration and northward return in summer in the Americas which spans the life of three to four generations of the butterfly.

Reunions

Late last year the mysterious Moth Women finally returned to their place of origin after an extensive tour with the Geelong Gallery/NETS Victoria exhibition The enchanted forest - new gothic story tellers during 2008-2009. We have only recently unpacked them and displayed them in a new hang, along with some newer members of the growing Moth Women community.

Pictured below this is a recent studio still life, featuring painted papier mache moth masks completed to date.

On Friday afternoon, February 26, we were also delighted to welcome back to the studio two of our favourite people and artists, Paul Compton and Priscilla Ambrosini.

The 80s Exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery

The 80s was curated by Cooper-Lavery. Much of the exhibition draws from the gallery's extensive collection of paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures. It also features a striking installation of album covers gathered from private collections and a selection of distinctive 80s dresses selected from the Darnell Collection in NSW.

The exhibition opened on 28 November, 2009 and closes on 17 January, 2010.
