Zine Market at FEAR

  

Two new publications from Moth Woman Press (through which we publish our books and zines) will be launched this Saturday at FEAR (Femxle Experience Art Rebellion) in central Ballarat. 

Shadowomen 4, an eight-page mini-zine, pictured top, is illustrated with eight of my recent silhouette paintings. Limited copies of volumes 1-3 in the series will also be on display.

The mini-zine Eight Faces, pictured above, gathers together all of the paintings originally created for the annual exhibition One Hundred Faces at Playing in the Attic since the show was launched in 2020. The latest painted faces, which will be part of One Hundred Faces 2023, opening on 22 April, are featured on the front and back covers of the zine. 

A goodly selection of classic Moth Woman Press publications will also be available at FEAR Zine Market. 

I’m a big fan of zines and zine making as an accessible and affordable way of making, distributing and collecting artwork, and the sense of community it can bring.

Looking forward to unveiling Shadowomen 4 and Eight Faces, as well as meeting fellow zinesters - and hopefully you too - this coming Saturday.

An Englishwoman Abroad (Part 1)

 

For the past few days we’ve had a visitor from London to stay, one of my oldest and dearest friends, Sue Verney (pictured to my right in the above photo). Sue was keen to visit the APW George Collie Memorial Award exhibition at the Australian Print Workshop Gallery, and on Thursday we caught the train to Melbourne, our first rail trip since pre-pandemic days. It was a real treat, a vast improvement on travelling there by car. I love train travel and hadn’t realised just how much I’ve missed it. 

In tandem with my prints in the APW exhibition are a series of displays of my artist books and zines in the gallery window, with additional book art displayed in the gallery space. Most are available for acquisition, should you desire one, or even several, of your very own.

The APW gallery is open today until 5 pm.
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10 am - 5 pm. 

The exhibition is current to October 1.

Life at the Top of the Art World

Life at the Top of the Art World - a survival guide by Alice is one of four Moth Woman Press mini-zines that will be launched tomorrow afternoon at THE STICKY INSTITUTE FESTIVAL OF THE PHOTOCOPIER ZINE FAIR.

Meanwhile, at MOTH WOMAN PRESS...

Progress on my latest body of paintings is continuing at a slow, but steady pace. Recently, however, I took a detour to Moth Woman Press, following the chance discovery of a vintage children's poetry book in a secondhand market at Smythesdale.

As if by magic, the little book opened onto Alice, a short poem by Christina Rossetti. I've been interested in Rossetti's work for many years, but was unfamiliar with her writings for young readers. The poem, one of two of her verses contained in the book, refers to an ebullient child. Whether Rossetti's subject was real or fictional may well remain a mystery, but her description fits our little cat Alice like a glove. The urge to combine Rossetti's verse and a selection of my recent photos of Alice in an eight-page mini-zine proved irresistible. This is the result.

TONERPALOOZA II ZINE FAIR

Alas, there will be no rest for me after the deinstall of From the bower (see previous post).

At present I'm feverishly preparing for the TONERPALOOZA II ZINE FAIR at the State Library of Victoria. Coordinated by Sticky Institute to coincide with the current exhibition, SELF-MADE: ZINES AND ARTIST BOOKS, the zine fair will take place in the Cowen Gallery, State Library of Victoria, on Saturday 23 - Sunday 24 September between 10 am - 4 pm. I'll be there with Moth Woman Press on Sunday the 24th.

To mark the event, I've made three new mini-zines, including Her own Society (see below).

The Melbourne Art Book Fair and Australian Zine Showcase, NGV International

Yesterday, Saturday March 18, from 2.30 - 8 pm, Moth Woman Press took part in the rotating Sticky Institute Australian Zine Showcase, the latest and freshest addition to the annual Melbourne Art Book Fair at NGV International. Directly below is the view from our stand -

Due to the number of participants, Moth Woman Press was relegated to a half table, but we were pleased with the final result.

Some of the day's greatest pleasures were provided by visits from friends, some old, some new. Below on the righthand side is one of the former, Louise Jennison, mugging with my indispensable assistant, Shane Jones. Louise is one half of the team of artist book makers, Gracia and Louise, who are showing their books and zines in the Melbourne Art Book Fair. She and Shane are pointing to the location of their stand in the Great Hall.

In the Great Hall, Moth Woman Press is represented by Esther Gyorki (pictured right) at Assembly Books. My artist book, Castles in the Hair (2013) hangs open, next to the Assembly Books sign. The Melbourne Art Book Fair opened on Friday, 16 March and ends at 5 pm today. For more views of the book and zine fairs, visit Moth Woman Press.

FOTP 2017

Pictured below are a handful of highlight's from yesterday afternoon's spectacular 2017 Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair at magnificent Melbourne Town Hall. Despite a number of conflicting events in our fair city, the turn-out was fantastic, with visitor numbers well into the thousands. With Sticky Institute at the helm, support from the City of Melbourne, assistance above and beyond the call of duty from my partner, Shane Jones, and warm companionship from our stall neighbours, Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison, what could possibly go wrong? Well, thanks in no small part to Sticky Institute and the dedication and professionalism of our fellow stall holders, absolutely nothing did.

The 2017 Festival of the Photocopier

In recent weeks, most of our creative hours have been spent at Moth Woman Press, in feverish preparation for the 2017 Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair at Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday week, February 12.

To the right of the poster above are three mini-zines I've made especially for the fair. They are (from top): Pressed for Time, Leaves of Absence and The artist's hand. Accompanying them will be an extensive array of Moth Woman Press zines and mini-zines.

What with the artist book Leaves of Absence nearing completion, two more artist’s books on the go and three zines in various stages of completion, Moth Woman Press is a hive of fevered activity. But I think I have the situation in hand.

Australian Launch of Winsor and Newton Graphic Markers

It's hard to believe that this time last week (on Thursday, July 7, to be more precise) I was in Sydney attending the Australian launch of the Winsor and Newton Pigment Markers, Promarkers and Brushmarkers at Jasco Headquarters. 

The event also marked the debut of the Moth Women Vigilantes mini-zine, a substantial number of which were acquired by the company. (For more about the zine, see previous three posts).

A huge thank you to the good folk at Jasco for their generosity and hospitality. Being a Winsor and Newton Global Ambassador has been a privilege and a pleasure.

'Moth Women Vigilantes ROGUES GALLERY' - a new mini zine

On the cutting board: Moth Women Vigilantes ROGUES GALLERY, a pocket-sized zine incorporating the eight Vigilantes recently immortalised in Winsor and Newton pigment markers. (See last two posts).

Floor talk at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery

Pictured above is The Story of the Moth Masks, a mini-zine made in celebration of the group exhibition Eventide at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. The cover girl is Cossodes lyonetii Moth Woman, the linocut I created for the show. Copies of the zine are also available at the gallery.

Eventide was curated by Rona Green. This coming Sunday, 26 June, between 2 - 3 pm, Rona, Euan Heng and I are presenting an informal floor talk at MPRG about our contributions to Eventide, ‘the magical moment when day meets night'. We’d love to see you there.

For those who can’t make the talk, but plan to visit the show, Eventide concludes on 3 July.

More Eventidings

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I'm unable to attend today's opening of Eventide at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, so I'm very grateful for the partial installation view below, which MPRG curator Gary Lacy has forwarded via Eventide curator Rona Green.

The collected fairy tales, are now on display in the shop at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, where they will remain for the remainder of the show. The 2016 Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair

Last weekend was a mammoth one. On the afternoon of Sunday, 14 February, the day after the Modern Myth artist talks at Counihan Gallery In Brunswick, I was a first-time participant in the legendary Sticky Institute Festival of the Photocopier Zine Fair (FOTP16) at Melbourne Town Hall .
